"Rebel Moon" is rising.
Netflix released the first trailer for Zack Snyder's space adventure Tuesday, featuring Sofia Boutella as the mysterious warrior Kora, who is forced to protect her adopted peaceful colony from the evil Imperium and Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein). The movie, subtitled "Part 1: A Child of Fire," streams Dec. 22.
Algerian actress Boutella, who battled Tom Cruise in "The Mummy," shows impressive fighting skills in the showcase role.
"She's amazing," producer Deborah Snyder told journalists at a media event for the film earlier this month. "We looked at many different women. But only Sofia had the gravitas to pull off all the acting scenes and she was a dancer for so many years. So the choreography in these scenes is very believable. We (stunt) doubled her only once in the whole film."
Kora seeks out warriors from neighboring planets in the film, which is inspired by the 1954 Akira Kurosawa film "Seven Samurai."
Warriors played by Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam and Ray Fisher are recruited by Kara, along with Jimmy, a robot knight, voiced by Anthony Hopkins, who narrates the trailer.
"Anthony Hopkins is just awesome," said Snyder, who produces, directs and co-wrote the movie. "It was fun to develop that character with him, to talk about the journey."
The trailer shows a glimpse of Jena Malone's outrageous and mysterious arachnoid creature Harmada battling a twin-sword-wielding warrior Nemesis, played by South Korean actress Doona Bae.
Netflix's sequel film, "Part 2: The Scargiver," is planned for release April 19, 2024.
